Art and Technology

A Digital Art and Interaction Design Programme for the Age of Artificial Intelligence

Programme Introduction

The Art and Technology programme is not a simple combination of “art + technology” in the traditional sense. Rather, it is an interdisciplinary programme positioned at the forefront of digital media technology and oriented towards high-growth fields of the future. It provides an important entry point into the interconnected areas of design, interaction, artificial intelligence, digital content and future experience.

Programme Aims

Against the backdrop of rapid developments in artificial intelligence, which are transforming modes of creation, media ecologies and industrial structures, this programme aims to cultivate interdisciplinary and innovative talent with technological understanding, multimodal expression, interactive innovation and critical thinking. The programme emphasises that students should not only be able to use technology, but also understand it; not only realise creative ideas, but also reflect on how technology influences human cognition, behaviour, emotion and social relationships.

Learning Outcomes

Through their study on the programme, students will be expected to develop the following competencies:

·Technological application: students will master artificial intelligence tools and digital media technologies, and will be able to apply them to creative practice and system development.

·Multimodal creation: students will be able to integrate image, moving image, sound, space and interaction, using multiple media forms for creative expression.

·Computational thinking and generative capability: students will understand algorithms, data and rule-based mechanisms, and will explore generative and system-based approaches to creative practice.

·Technological understanding and critical awareness: students will be able to analyse the role and impact of technology in culture, communication and society.

·Interdisciplinary innovation: students will be able to undertake experimental creative practice and continuously update their methods within a rapidly changing technological environment.

Programme Structure and Content

Students will systematically study design thinking and the fundamentals of visual and form-based practice. They will focus on developing core technical skills in creative coding, physical computing, digital moving-image art and intelligent collaborative creation. They will also study interaction design methodologies, including user experience design, information communication design, and cross-media research and creation. Through this, students will develop an awareness of technology ethics and the capacity for systematic innovation.

In the later years of the programme, students will focus on developing specialist expertise in Digital Art and Interaction Design. They will explore advanced areas such as human–computer interaction, affective computing and embodied intelligence, speculative game design, cross-media exhibition and performance design, and curatorial studies. The programme also offers advanced innovation-focused courses, including design competition practice and frontier topics in interdisciplinary design education. These courses are designed to cultivate interdisciplinary design talent for intelligent creation, interaction design and innovative digital content design.

Duration and Degree

This is a four-year full-time programme. Students who complete all required modules within the period of study specified by the University, achieve passing grades, and obtain the total number of credits required by the programme will be permitted to graduate. The University will issue a graduation certificate. Students who meet the requirements for the conferment of a bachelor’s degree will be awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree.

Project-Based Learning and Internship Opportunities

During their studies, students will join laboratories jointly established by industry mentors and academic mentors, where they will learn through a project-based learning model. Students may also undertake professional internships with technology companies, digital entertainment companies, new media art organisations, digital culture platforms, intelligent interaction enterprises, and media and creative institutions.

Scholarships

Students with outstanding academic performance may be eligible for scholarships funded or supported by the government, the University and corporate partners, including the National Scholarship, the National Encouragement Scholarship and the Jingshi Scholarship.

Overseas Study Opportunities

The University offers a wide range of international exchange programmes. Students with outstanding academic performance may have the opportunity to receive priority recommendation for study and exchange at institutions such as the University of Oxford, the University of California, Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, and Keio University in Japan.
