SCHOOL OF FUTURE DESIGN, BEIJING NORMAL UNIVERSITY
Professor Liu Guanzhong Lectures on China’s Approach to Future Design at SFD

On April 2, 2026, the School of Future Design at Beijing Normal University launched its 5th-anniversary academic series with a keynote lecture by Professor Liu Guanzhong. A senior professor at Tsinghua University and renowned figure in industrial design, Professor Liu spoke on "The Chinese Approach: Design Logic for Trailblazing Progress."

Design Logic and Industrial Transformation

Professor Liu emphasized that design is not merely about creating objects but a way of thinking to solve problems. He distinguished between "facts" and "truth," advocating for systematic logic over fragmented perception. He traced the evolution of industrial design as a revolution in production relations, moving from craftsmanship to the coordination of complex social systems. He outlined three stages of China's industrial design growth: from OEM-focused styling to ODM/OBM brand integration, and now toward OSM-driven service-oriented manufacturing. He stressed the need for "trailblazing progress" rather than "overtaking on the curve," focusing on innovation in standards and systems.

Design Methodology and the Chinese Approach

Professor Liu introduced his methodology of "Design Affairology," which prioritizes understanding human behavior and context ("affairs") over the mere creation of objects. He advocated for a sharing society that "encourages use, not possession," framing this as the core value of a sustainable Chinese path distinct from Western models of consumption. He also noted that true cultural inheritance lies not in luxury but in the wisdom of restraint and balance.

Dialogue and Educational Philosophy

A discussion followed with Dean Gao Peng, Professor Wang Min and Professor Meng Fanhang. Dean Gao remarked that education is about opening cognition and establishing one's own logical framework. Professor Wang recalled Professor Liu’s early efforts to build an independent Chinese design pedagogy rather than simply importing Western models. The conversation underscored design as both a professional practice and a personal conviction.
