Project: Hengqin Hongqi Village Tourism Development and Art & Cultural Creative Street Revitalization Plan

Building on Hongqi Village’s existing foundations for tourism, including its natural setting, cultural assets and current business mix, the team has developed an overall proposal covering spatial planning, a brand system, public art and cultural and creative products. The aim is to draw on the distinctive appeal of Hengqin and Macao culture, bring together the local mountain and coastal landscape with aesthetic education and a range of arts, and create a community that is both pleasant to live in and enjoyable to visit.

Over two months, the team worked through four rounds of discussion and refined eight versions of the proposal. The final Chinese brand name is “Rong’an”. Rong refers to the banyan trees that are most closely associated with Hongqi Village and suggests openness, integration and vitality. An, meaning shore, points to the place where water meets land and carries ideas of connection and belonging. Put together, the name captures the village’s character, shaped by both mountains and sea, and reflects a shared hope for its future: that it will become a vital link between past and future, and between nature and everyday life. The Portuguese name, “MANIO”, comes from the village’s former name, “Ma Niao River”, and preserves its earliest geographical and historical memory.
