The Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography at the Chinese Academy of Sciences was established in 1998, formed by the merger of the Xinjiang Institute of Biology, Soil and Desert Research and the Xinjiang Institute of Geography.
The Institute focuses on the cutting-edge of science and technology in the ecology and environment of international arid regions. It addresses the significant demands of the national Silk Road Economic Belt initiative and the overarching goals of social stability and long-term peace in Xinjiang. The Institute pioneers innovative theories and methodologies in arid zone science. Within the fields of arid zone ecology and geography, it conducts research and experimental demonstrations on major issues such as natural resource development, ecological restoration, environmental management, biodiversity conservation, and regional sustainable development. The Institute plays an irreplaceable leading and foundational role in the ecology and environment of Central Asia's arid regions.
The SFD has established a strategic partnership with the Institute. Both parties actively engage in cultural, scientific, and educational exchanges in Central Asian countries and collaborate in industry-academia-research cooperation, continuously deepening their understanding in interdisciplinary teaching and research areas.
